This is the final week of the Meridian Township Farmers Market (10/28 and 10/31).

If you’re looking to stock up, here are some helpful hints for storage:

Potatoes
Most potatoes will keep at room temperature, away from light, for up to 2 weeks.  For longer storage, potatoes keep best at 45-50 degrees, high humidity and in darkness. If the temperatures are too warm they will sprout, if too cold the starch will turn to sugar.
Winter Squash/Pumpkins
Store at room temperature, and they should keep for at least a month. Or store in a dry, cool (50-55 degrees) but not cold location to keep for several months. An unheated garage is often a good location.
Apples
Store in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator for weeks. WARNING: Don’t store apples directly next to other storage crops. The gases released by the natural ripening of apples encourages vegetables or fruit to decay more quickly.
Other Root Crops (Carrots, Beets, Celeriac, Rutabagas, Parsnips, etc.)
Generally, greens should be removed (in the case of beets they can be saved for later use). Keep in the refrigerator in a plastic bag for 2-4 weeks. For very long term storage these root crops can be buried in moist sand and kept in a cool but not cold location.
Garlic
It stores well in a cool, dark, dry and well ventilated place for several months. For very long-term storage, garlic can be minced and covered or blended with olive oil and placed in small airtight containers and frozen. After removing from the freezer, keep refrigerated.
Leeks
Refrigerate leeks unwashed and dry with roots attached for up to 2 weeks. Wrap lightly in plastic to avoid aromas spreading to other foods.
Brussels Sprouts
For best storage, leave the sprouts on the stalk. Store in a cool place, like a garage. If removed from the stalk store in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Peppers and more
While peppers cannot be stored long term like other crops, they can be easily frozen. Simply wash, remove the seeds and chop or slice as you see fit. Dry them and place them in a freezer ready plastic bag and you’ll have peppers all winter long.

There will be a Market the day before Thanksgiving (11/25) from 10-2pm.

Sweet cherries have arrived at the market!

We hope to see you Saturday, since all the nice summertime treats are beginning to arrive!

We’re open on the 4th of July. Please visit us across the street (this week only, since they’re setting up for the fireworks). We will be somewhere in the parking lot of the Younkers Home, the old site of Mervyn’s- just look for a bunch of tents bunched together.

There are about 20 vendors attending and it should be good! Look for lettuce, garlic scapes, snow peas, strawberries and even a selection of meats!

The farmers market begins this Saturday  8am-2pm. Farmers will have a wide variety of vegetable transplants as well as some fresh spring greens and other tasty surprises.

We hope you brave the rain and come out to see the best Mid-Michigan has to offer!

This month the Meridian Township Farmers Market is the featured market on the Only at Farmers Market website. It features some interesting video stories from farmers and customers as well as a feature story.

Make sure not to miss our annual Thanksgiving Market this Wednesday from10am-2pm! There should be lots of great baked goods and fresh vegetables from around the area. Some names you might know are Wilber Hochstetler (Country Products), Stone Cloud Gardens, Owosso Organics, Wildflower Eco-Farm, Czech Bakery and Titus Farms- among many other.

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the market this year! We hope you’ll continue to support the market- and hopefully we’ll see you for the special Thanksgiving Market, which is the day before Thanksgiving (Wednesday) from 10-2 (though vendors are usually there earlier).

Can you believe there are only 5 weeks left of the Farmers Market!

Here’s some of the upcoming events:

*Saturday, September 27th from 10-noon: “Music at the Market” by Ben Hassenger  www.myspace.com/bquietmusic

*Saturday, October 4th from 11-4pm: ” Heritage Festival” at the Historical Village, across the wooden bridge.

Blueberries and peaches are in their last week at the market… so get them while you can.  Apple cider is now available at the market along with everyone’s favorite, Honey Crisp apples.  Also, come and pick out your pumpkins and gourds for the fall season many varieties available.

We also have a new vendor on Wednesdays, Runkel Orchards, home of the Runkel Apple.  Come and hear the story of how this apple came into existence.
